What do you want to impart to the residents and potential patients in the South Bay?

RM: I think for the patient the key thing is that this technology is not available in many hospitals. The South Bay is such a hotbed of high quality medicine, and we have the capability of doing procedures with a robot that is only available in a handful of places in the United States.

GM: We have the ability to offer the latest and greatest technology that big centers around the world have; we’re able to offer the same quality of care here. The bottom line is that patients do better, their stay in the hospital is shorter, they have less pain, shorter recovery, and a faster return to normal activities. Short-term data shows that our surgical outcomes are much improved with the robotic technique, and I think the long-term data will support that as well. That is the most exciting thing about it, that we can do better things for our patients.

Ramin Mirhashemi, MD, a gynecologic oncologist, took a bit of a circuitous route to becoming a physician, piling up several degrees at USC. If he were to choose another profession, it would be ski instructor, as he was a competitive racer. Mirhashemi might claim that his two crowning achievements are his daughters, ages 8 and 6, whose pictures liven up his office. The oldest has expressed an interest in medicine, but judging from the twinkle in Mirhashemi’s eye when he speaks of them, he just hopes they’re happy and successful in whatever they choose to pursue.

Garrett Matsunaga, MD, is one of the newest physicians to join Little Company of Mary. He enjoys golf, snowboarding, bodyboarding and world travel. The Honolulu native graduated from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and was awarded his medical degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Matsunaga did his urologic surgical residency and a fellowship in robotics at UC Irvine, and is an official proctor for Intuitive Surgical, the manufacturer of the hospital’s new da Vinci S robotic system. The Matsunagas’ next major accomplishment: baby Matsunaga due in November.
