When Minutes Count
YOU DONT HAVE TO BE AFRAID. These reassuring words
comfort those who find themselves inside one of the fifteen patient
rooms of the recently renovated and expanded Little Company of Mary
San Pedro Hospital Emergency Department. Posters bearing this message
adorn the wall, but its the dedicated medical and nursing staff of
this state-of-the-art facility who bring those words to life. In fact,
according to LCM-SPH Administrator Nancy Carlson, the community
has embraced both the staff and the enhanced healing environment of
this new facility. A recent Press, Ganey patient satisfaction
survey ranked the LCM-SPH Emergency Department in the top 15% when
compared to 940 hospitals nationwide, revealed
Carlson.
This expansion, made possible by generous gifts from individuals
and foundations to the Campaign for Health, has
altered the portrait of emergency care for the community it
serves. This successful fund-raising campaign raised $7.6
million from 1998 to 2001 under the leadership of Hugh
Hoffman and Bill DeMucci. Close to 25,000 patients turned
to LCM-SPH for emergency care last year, with patient volume
increasing from 8 to 10% annually due, in part, to other
hospital closings and decreased access to primary care
physicians for those who are uninsured. The need for a dignified,
comfortable environment where patients can receive not only emergency
care, but also a physical exam and medicalwork-up, is greater than
ever.

For walk-ins, a seat in the patient-friendly waiting room
starts the process, followed by an initial assessment in the
triage center. ED Medical Director Stephen Shea, MD, pleased
that the new facility allows for a more efficient method of
handling the growing number of patients, explained, We
have a dedicated Fast Track to decrease waiting
times for less seriously ill or injured patients, as well as
being able to handle our true emergencies more rapidly with
state-of-the-art monitoring and computer equipment.
