Like Father, Like Son - A Legacy of Caring

YOUNG CAMERON, Harrison and Emily MacLean didn’t know it at the time, but having Little Company of Mary Hospital as their birthplace was only the beginning of their father’s connection to Little Company of Mary. In 2003, Jeffrey MacLean joined the Little Company of Mary Community Health Foundation Board of Trustees out of gratitude for the care his family received here. “All of us have benefited from LCM’s outstanding care. Given the difficult status of funding health care today and the importance of having a first-class medical institution in the South Bay, supporting LCM with my time and money just made sense,” commented MacLean.

This spirit of philanthropy towards the medical community had its roots early in MacLean’s life. His father was the chief of neurology at the Mason Clinic in Seattle, Washington. “Even though I didn’t pursue medicine as a profession, I grew up in a medical family. My father devoted his life to caregiving and was the ‘go-to’ person for friends and family, helping them to navigate medical care in a changing environment,” said MacLean. Jim Sala, a fellow trustee and MacLean’s neighbor, expressed confidence in MacLean’s qualifications. “Jeff saw what his father was doing and because of that upbringing, understands what we are trying to accomplish at LCM.”

As President of Wurtz, Inc., MacLean brings to the board an eleven-year history of advising endowments and foundations in how to invest their financial resources. “My volunteer position at LCM is the first time I have been able to put my professional expertise to work as a trustee, instead of as a paid consultant,” said MacLean, when asked about his strengths and hopes for contributing to LCM’s advancement.

Melanie MacLean joins her husband in making a community connection with her participation on the board of the Peninsula Education Foundation and as a former Sandpipers chairman of For Our Children. As a couple, they are part of the Peninsula Committee Childrens Hospital. “Melanie and Jeff are a wonderful couple, bringing good community insights to the LCM family. It is an asset for us to have them come on board,” said friend and fellow LCMCHF trustee Mark Pfeil.
