THE NATION IS EXPERIENCING a severe shortage of qualified nurses and, consequently,
an intense pressure to find those women and men who are the frontline force in the
struggle to meet the complex health needs of a growing and graying society. Like all
California acute health care providers, Little Company of Mary is not immune to the
effects of the nursing shortage. Fortunately, thanks to a local philanthropic couple,
Little Company of Mary now has a challenge grant to support innovative programs
enhancing recruitment and retention of nurses. Because of this generous pledge of
$500,000 to the Friends of Nursing program, others are challenged to match the
donors gifts two-for-one, offering inspiration to join in support
of this exceptional health care system. (As an example, a $1,000 individual gift
to Friends of Nursing would be matched by $500 in grant funds.) Friends of Nursing,
a multi-faceted approach to recruitment and retention, is already contributing to
a more stable RN workforce.
Janice Brandmeyer, RN, and a trustee of the LCM Community Health Foundation,
responded to the challenge with her own gift to Friends of Nursing and strong belief
that maintaining the quality of nursing is fundamental to providing high quality
health care. The ability of LCM to continue providing the competent, compassionate,
high-touch care unique to the organization and the mission of the Sisters
is dependent on its commitment to nursing excellence.
