Phunding Hope
An Inspirational Tale of Philanthropic Partnerships
TOO SIMPLE IT SEEMS, THE THOUGHT that laughter could redeem a weary world. But
the birth of the Jester and his helpmate, Pharley, through the creative handiwork
of David Saltzmans best-selling book, The Jester Has Lost His Jingle,
has delighted thousands of children and their families. David, an alumnus of Chadwick
School in Palos Verdes, died of Hodgkins disease in 1990 at age 22, nine
months after graduating from Yale University. Through this charming tale, Saltzman
left a legacy of love and determination that led his family to establish the
non-profit organization, The Jester & Pharley Phund.

The Phund is dedicated to bringing the joy of laughter and the love of learning
to all children, especially those who may be ill or have special needs. Modeled
after the book and developed by the Phund, the Jester & Pharley Smile Cart
was born. This brightly colored mobile cart houses a television, video and CD-audio
cassette player, as well as Jester & Pharley books and dolls ready to entertain
young patients during their hospital stay.
Emerging from the Phund is an inspiring tale of philanthropy, one involving community
partnerships and contributions large and small, from youngsters to million- dollar
foundations. In December 2002, the Mericos Foundation of South Pasadena awarded a
generous grant of $10,000 to the Little Company of Mary Community Health Foundation
for the benefit of children in the LCM San Pedro Hospital. Arlo Sorensen, Chairman
of The Whittier Trust company and a Mericos Director, commented, The foundation
is pleased to partner with LCM and the Jester & Pharley Phund by providing the
means for children in the San Pedro and Harbor area communities to enjoy the Jester
& Pharley Smile Cart, books and dolls.
