Mission Maker Tina Lestelle Turns Time into Gifts

WITH THE HOLIDAY spirit in mind, and less than twenty-four hours after being inspired by Mission Maker Chairwoman Beverly Wishon, Tina Lestelle began turning time into gifts. A fifteen-year employee of Little Company of Mary, Lestelle made her first donation of PTO (paid time off) in December 1999 and since has provided almost $7,200 in support to the Little Company of Mary Community Health Foundation.

The cash value of Lestelle’s PTO funds programs close to her heart. The Partners for Healthy Kids mobile pediatric healthcare van, the Mary Potter Program for Human Dignity, and the Chemical Dependency Unit have all been beneficiaries of Lestelle’s generosity. It is a generosity inspired long before Mission Makers, the Foundation’s employee giving program. “My parents were very compassionate and made people feel welcome. They were the first ones to help someone and were very generous by nature, never expecting anything in return,” said Lestelle. “Because of them, I am able to see the need.”

Lestelle noticed one need during her recent assignment as Unit Secretary at the Rehabcentre. “Seeing patients who needed hand therapy caused me to reflect. How would that be? My whole job revolves around using my hands. What if I couldn’t use them?” Occupational Therapy Manager Lolly Abastillas is grateful for Lestelle’s Mission Maker gifts, hoping that a much-needed Hand Therapy Workstation will become a reality that much sooner. This self-contained therapy table allows up to three patients to experience a variety of treatment options simultaneously — treatments that enable actively employed workers with hand injuries to return to their jobs.

Making a difference in the lives of patients and others is what Mission Makers is all about. According to Wishon, “This simple group was born out of the desire of a few employees to make a difference in the community where we live and work. Since the Sisters’ mission of caring is such an important part of our work life, the name Mission Makers not only captures our strong feelings about the mission of care, but also demonstrates that ‘we, the employees, make the mission happen!’” With friends like Lestelle and Wishon, the mission of the Sisters is in good hands.
