Peripheral / Renal Angiography

In addition to the angiography of the heart, angiography can also be used to detect blockages or other problems in the arteries and veins of the arms and legs (peripheral) and kidneys (renal), as well other areas of the body. This X-ray test takes pictures of the blood flow within the artery. A catheter is introduced into an artery, usually the leg, and guided into the artery that is being evaluated. Contrast medium is injected to make the vessel visible on the X-ray. Images of the contrast medium as it flows through the area of interest are recorded, allowing doctors to see if the arteries are narrowed or blocked, or to detect the presence of blood clots or aneurysms.
