Q:
Can I receive Communion while I am there? And is Last Rites the same
as the Sacrament of the Sick?
A: Im glad you asked. Lets take one question
at a time. Can you receive Communion while you are here
absolutely!
In fact, if your religion is listed as Catholic, a volunteer Eucharistic
Minister will come each day to offer you Communion. Now heres
something you should know about Last
Rites.
In the early church, prayer, anointing, confession and communion were
offered to the sick for their healing. The anointing oils represent the
presence of the Holy Spirit (oils were also used for medicinal purposes
in the past) and prayers are offered for healing, the forgiveness of sins
and courage in the face of life threatening illness. Over the years, people
waited to have this kind of sacrament (called the Sacrament of the Sick)
until they were about to die, instead of at the beginning of their illness
for the purpose of healing. It became commonly known as the Last
Rites though it was always intended for the newly ill.
We offer the Sacrament of the Sick to all Catholic patients
who would like to continue their baptism vows and have the presence of Jesus
Christ The Anointed One realized in the care of their body.
We also offer this sacrament to those that are dying, even though they may be
unable to communicate. This sacrament along with Reconciliation,
Eucharist and a daily Celebration of the Eucharist Liturgy (i.e., Mass)
in our chapel, is available to all who desire it.
